A local artist has created nine renditions of the stars of Matariki, each a unique representation of the folklore behind it.
The work of local artist Wyvern Brightwell, his wife Evelyn said he has been studying and creating art based on Maori myths and legends for decades.
The nine pictures are on display at the Matamata Library throughout the month of June and July, in celebration of the Maori New Year.
Inspired by his interpretations of the whetū of Matariki, Wyvern has explored the lore behind each star, such as Pōhutukawa, the star that represents ancestors and whanau who have since passed on, or Waitā, star of the ocean and all life within it. He has incorporated these aspects into his design, telling his own korero through his work, as a link to Maori mythology.
To see his work up close, visit the Matamata Library before the end of July.
