At Matamata-Piako District Libraries, we love exercising our freedom to read!
From Thursday 19 March 2026 until the end of March 2027, we will be running our Banned Books Reading Challenge, appealing to the rebel in you! The challenge comprises a list of 30 curated books of which you'll need to read at least 12 over the span of one year in order to complete the challenge. There will be prizes up for grabs along the way as well as a series of book chats and some big final prizes.
All the books included in the list have either been banned or challenged during their lifespan, mostly overseas. Please note that none of the books on the list are currently banned in New Zealand.
The challenge is aimed at people aged 16+. If you are under the age of 18, please refer to your parent or guardian regarding your participation in the challenge.
The sign up form will be available below from mid March. We hope you're just as excited as we are!
