In an effort to inspire reading in creative way while combining it with the great outdoors, the libraries have installed StoryWalks® in both Matamata and Morrinsville. The idea is to build youngsters' literacy skills without them even knowing and to encourage time with friends and whānau in a free, outdoor space where everyone is welcome.
The StoryWalk® consists of pages of childrens' book displayed on boards which are secured to posts along a path. The StoryWalk® Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. Storywalk® is a registered service mark owned by Ms. Ferguson.
You can find the Morrinsville StoryWalk® at the Rotary Centennial Walkway Lockerbie Park. The current installation is an original piece titled ", which was written and illustrated by the students of Morrinsville Intermediate in collaboration with Ngāti Hauā.
You can find the Matamata Storywalk® at Swap Park. The current installation is The Little Yellow Digger by Betty and Alan Gilderdale, published by Scholastic.
Matamata-Piako Libraries would like to acknowledge the New Zealand Libraries Partnership Programme for the grant money to fund the permanent installations, and the MenzShed for generously creating the posts on which the story pages are displayed.
